The Story of Christmas
NARRATOR: This morning we go back 2000 years in time to Jerusalem, during the reign of Herod, king or Judah. There was a priest and his wife, Zachariah and Elizabeth. They were childless and now they were quite old. The angel Gabriel appeared in the temple to Zachariah and told him that Elizabeth and Zachariah would have a son.
SCRIPTURE READING #1: The angel said: You are to name him John, and you shall have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord and he shall turn many sons and daugthers of Israel back to their God. He will herald God’s arrival in the style and strength of Elijah, soften the hearts of parents to children and kindle devout understanding among hardened skeptics – he’ll get the people ready for God.
Emmanuel
NARRATOR: It wasn’t long before Elizabeth became pregnant. She went off by herself for five months, relishing her pregnancy. “So this is how God acts to remedy my unfortunate condition!” she said. Now it was the time for the Savior to be born. God was well aware of the state of things in the world in general and Israël in particular, they were soarly oppressed by the Romans and the time was right. For the coming of the Savior God had chosen His people, His special servants.
SCRIPTURE READING #2: In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you. Don't be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High."
"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin "How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?" The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called 'the Son of God'."
Breath of Heaven
NARRATOR: At this time Caesar Augustus was Emperor of the Roman Empire. For the purpose of levying taxes, he decreed that the whole Roman world was to be counted and the news came to Israël that a census was to be taken. The best way for the Jews to be counted was for them to report to the census takers in the city of their ancestors.
SCRIPTURE READING #3: So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem, the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in strips of cloth and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:4-7)
Bethlehems morning
NARRATOR: The stable, used for animals in those days, was usually a natural cave hewn out of the rock. At least it was a private shelter from the cold night. Mary knew exactly what to do with a new baby. Girls were taught what to do - and now God helped her to do it. As Mary took the baby in her arms she was looking into the face of the Son of God, the Messiah.
Sweet Little Jesus Boy
NARRATOR: On the hillside near Bethlehem there were shepherds who were about to settle down near their flocks for the night.
SCRIPTURE READING #4: An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Don't be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today, in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth and lying in a manger."
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests." (Luke 2: 9-14)

Shepherds leave your flock
NARRATOR: The shepherds searched the stable of Bethlehem until they found Mary, Joseph and the newborn Savior. They stood around the manger, gazing with wonder at the baby whose little body was bound in cloth just as the angel had said. Some could have been shepherd boys, like David had been years before. Others might have been weather-beaten men. But they all worshipped.
These were special, sacred moments and Mary stored the memory of them away in her heart. The shepherds went away from the stable happy and praising God. They had seen the promised Messiah, God's Son, the Savior of the world
SCRIPTURE READING #5: For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him, should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

NARRATOR: Wise men arrived in Jerusalem from the East. They asked around: Where can we find and pay homage to the newborn King of the Jews? We observed a star in the eastern sky that signaled his birth. We’re on a pilgrimage to worship him. King Herod and most of Jerusalem were terrified. He gathered all the high priests and religion scholars in the city together and asked where the Messiah was supposed to be born. They told him: in Bethlehem, Judah territory, as the prophet Micah had foretold.
SCRIPTURE READING #6: It’s you, Bethlehem, in Judah’s land, no longer bringing up the rear. From you will come the leader who will shepherd-rule my people, my Israel.
NARRATOR: King Herod passed this on to the wise men and asked them to diligently search for the young child, so that he could also come and worship him. But we know that he had others plans.
SCRIPTURE READING #7: When they had heard the king, they departed; and the star which they had seen in the east went before them till it came to the place where the young child was. And when they came in the house they saw the young child with Mary his mother and fell down and worshipped him. And they presented gifts: gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed to their own country in another way.
Wise men still seek Him
NARRATOR: The shepherds and wise men returned glorifying God. Their rejoicing did not call attention to their own privilege. It was full of Christ and praise to God. Here is our example. This Christmas, let's rejoice in the coming of Jesus, our Savior, in such a way as keeps men's eyes on Him.
