Also for parking facilities, Stadsregio Amsterdam has developed a set of demands on both quality and quantity aspects. They have to be attractive and safe, since bicycle theft is a big problem in the Netherlands. The facilities need to be connected directly to the cycle routes and as close as possible to the platforms, so switching modalities can easily take place. Enough parking space is necessary; the amount depends on the importance of the node and it’s place in the network. The following sheets illustrate different locations.

9 Fietsflat bij Amsterdam CS
An example of the biggest open-air bicycle garage in the World; the ‘fietsflat’ bicycles can find a place in this 3 store high parking garage near the biggest node of public transport in the Region; Amsterdam Central Station. Everyday, it’s filled up completely, and the most photographed object in Amsterdam nowadays!

10 Locker Amsterdam Zuid WTC
This is an example of a basement parking, stocked with 2500 bicycles. Due to the enormous amount of space that is necessary for the parking, a solution is found under the surface. This is a relatively expensive garage, but it works well in areas where space is scarce and expensive. This parking garage is situated at the train station near the World Trade Centre in Amsterdam.

11 Halte Zuidtangent Ouderkerk a/d Amstel
Simple and fast; parking bikes almost directly at the platform. This is an example of a fast and regional bus system that attracts lots of passengers that choose to use the bike to ride to the platform.

12 NS station Nieuw-Vennep
Another good example of parking facilities is here at the Nieuw-Vennep train station. The use of the train has increased , due to new & attractive parking facilities near the stations. It attracts new and more travellers to the train and therefore it’s one of our strategies of ‘persuading’ the traveller/commuter to use the sustainable alternatives.

13 2009: Hoe verder? Gemeenten stimuleren: o.a. Amstelveenlijn, Edam busstation, Noord Zuidlijn, Leidseplein, de Dam? Samenwerking binnen Metropoolregio met andere overheden, Prorail en NS > Actieplan Ketenintegratie Rijksgelden > binnenhalen en wegzetten: Quick Wins, Groei op het Spoor, mobiliteitsaanpak,etc En mogelijk in de toekomst: Inhuren projecttrekkers door Stadsregio voor kleine gemeenten? Stadsregio een eigen buitendienst?
