COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: SERVICE LEARNING & COMMUNITY SERVICES Community service (maatschappelijke stage) –Community services are activities and services pursued in the community with the purpose of having individuals volunteer their time and energy to help others. –Emphasis on the experience, rather than on concrete learning goals. Service learning is deliberate –An organized service activity that meets identified community needs and students reflect the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content (Bringle & Hatcher, 1996) –Service learning combines elements of enhanced student learning with community service to voluntary organizations and is based on the proposition that ‘experience enhances understanding: understanding leads to more effective action’ (Eyler and Giles, 1999) –‘Service learning is not merely an add-on experience requiring students to do something good for the community; rather, it is a form of experiential learning’ (Kolb, 1984)
