Neen: kleine genetische verandering  anti-Darwin? Niet noodzakelijk: geen perfecte vorm

Hoe? “… small changes early in embryology accumulate through growth to yield profound differences among adults…”  kleine verandering, grote gevolgen (“rate genes”, Hox genes)  voortplanting mogelijk

Darwin vs. monsters? Spreekt de ‘hopeful monster’ hypothese het darwinistisch, gradueel beeld van evolutie tegen? Volgens Goldschmidt zelf: Ja “… profound and abrupt genetic alteration … making a new species at once…”

Volgens Gould: Niet noodzakelijk “But all theories of discontinuous change are not anti- Darwinian,…” “… does not produce a perfected form but serves as a ‘key adaptation’ … large set of collateral alterations … these may arise by a more traditional, gradual route once the key adaptation forces a profound shift in selective pressures.”

Bij selectie worden de varianten snel onafhankelijk van Hsp90  een omgeving die aanleiding geeft tot lagere Hsp90 concentraties resulteert in morfologische varianten waar selectie kan op inwerken “… allowing the rapid morphological radiations that are found in the fossil record.”
