Cyrus van Perzië verovert Lydië (547) en krijgt de macht over de Griekse steden in Klein-Azië -> aanstelling tirannen. Aristagoras, tiran van Miletus, begint in 499 de opstand en zoekt hulp bij Sparta en Athene “The Athenians were persuaded and voted to send twenty ships to assist the Ionians (…). But these were the beginning of troubles for both the Greeks and the barbarians.” (Herodotus )
