Klassieke bodemkaarten geven actuele toestand vaak niet goed weer Bodemtypen zijn onvoldoende onderscheidend voor standplaatstypering Grondwatertrappen geven alleen kwantitatieve informatie Waterkwaliteit bepalend voor standplaats (raakvlak ecohydrologie)

They can change when independent factors are altered, for example if hydrology changes due to drainage. There is also a feedback from the vegetation towards the humus profile due to differences in composition and input of litter. The composition depends on the plant species and the input depends on primary production and the part o fthe profile where inputs takes place. In a forest, litter falls on top of the soil, where in a grassland, dead roots are an important source of dead organic matter. The humus and parent material together are considered as the soil, the humus form characterises the humus properties of the soil Witin the ecosystem we recognise two groups of site factors, Conditional factors that describe physical and chemical properties of the soil, and operational factors that represent properties that affect physiological processes of the plants.
