Het zou moeilijk zijn landen te vinden die geen politieke relaties met België hebben gehad: Oostenrijk, Spanje, Frankrijk en de Nederlanden hebben onze architectuur en onze manier van leven beïnvloed. It would be difficult to name a European country who didn’t want to stake their claim in Belgium at one time or another. Traces of the Austrians, Spaniards, French and Dutch can still be seen in its architecture and in the lifestyle of its people. Il est difficile de trouver un pays européen n’ayant pas eu des relations politiques avec la Belgique : L’Autriche, l’Espagne, la France et les Pays Bas ont influencé notre architecture ainsi que notre manière de vivre.

België is multicultureel en veeltalig. In het Noorden is Vlaanderen een plat land met veel kanalen. Daar liggen de steden van Antwerpen, Brugge en Gent. Belgium is both multicultural and multilingual, Flanders in the north, a flat land criss-crossed by canals. The most important cities are Antwerp, Bruges and Ghent. La Belgique est multiculturelle et multilingue. Au Nord, la Flandre est une région plate traversée par des canaux. On y trouve les villes d’Anvers, Bruges et Gand.

Zoals de meeste Europese landen werd België gevormd na de Franse revolutie. Like most European countries Belgium was created after the French revolution. Comme la plupart des pays européens, la Belgique moderne s’est formée suite à la Révolution Française.

In 1830 werd België gecreeërd, een staat dat door de buurlanden als het meest democratische land beschouwd werd. Eigenlijk was het geleid door de Franstalige minderheid uit het noorden en het zuiden van het land. In 1830 a new state was created in Belgium, which was considered the most democratic country in Europe. Actually it was ruled by a French-speaking minority of rich families from the north and the south of the country. En 1830 fut créé en Belgique un état considéré alors par les voisins comme le plus démocratique d’Europe. En fait il était dirigé par une minorité francophone issue des familles riches du nord et du sud du pays.

Na de industriële revolutie werd ons land de tweede economische mogendheid in de wereld na Engeland. Following the Industrial Revolution our country became the second economic power after England. Suite à la Révolution Industrielle notre pays devient la deuxième puissance économique mondiale après l’Angleterre.

Het land werd in tweeën verdeeld: The country splits into two: Le pays se divise en deux : De Waalse bevolking, die belangrijker is, is rijk aan haar kolenmijnen en staalindustrie. De werkende klasse, die zeer arm is, wordt door socialisme aangetrokken. The walloon population, more numerous at the time, are rich thanks to their coal mines and steel factories. The working population are poor and feel attracted by socialism. La population wallonne alors plus nombreuse, est riche de ses mines de charbon et de sa sidérurgie. La population ouvrière, très pauvre, est attirée par le socialisme Vlaanderen, dat vooral gericht wordt op landbouw, blijft arm en is afhankelijk van zijn buur. Het grootste deel van de bevolking blijft katholiek. Flanders, essentially turned to agriculture, remains poor and depends on its neighbour. The largest part of the population remain Catholic. La Flandre, essentiellement agricole, reste pauvre et dépendra économiquement de son voisin. La population reste majoritairement catholique.

Vanaf de XIXde eeuw eisen de Vlaamse intellectuëlen tweetaligheid in Vlaanderen. De politici, die uit de Vlaamse en Waalse bourgeoisie stammen, weigeren belang te hechten aan Vlaamse en Waalse dialecten. From the XIXth century Flemish intellectuals have demanded bilingualism in Flanders. The politicians, all born into the Flemish and Walloon bourgeoisie, refuse to take Walloon and Flemish dialects into consideration. Dès le XIXème les intellectuels flamands réclament le bilinguisme en Flandre. Les politiciens, tous issus de la bourgeoisie flamande et wallonne, refusent d’accorder de l’importance aux dialectes flamands et wallons.

De Vlaamse beweging zal radicaal worden in de loopgraven tijdens de eerste wereldoorlog. De Nederlandstalige soldaten kunnen niet meer verdragen door Franstalige officieren te worden geleid, die ze niet verstaan en ze vormen de « Frontpartij ». Een minderheid van Vlaamse nationalisten uit België gaan met de Duitsers samenwerken om bij voorbeeld het Raad van Vlaanderen op te richten. The Flemish movement will become more radical in the « trenches » during the first World War.The Dutch- speaking soldiers won’t stand being led by French- speaking officers, whom they don’t understand. So they found the « Frontpartij ». A minority of Flemish nationalists are going to collaborate with the Germans to found the Council of Flanders. Le mouvement flamand va se radicaliser dans les tranchées de la première guerre mondiale. Les soldats néerlandophones ne supportant plus d’être dirigés par des officiers francophones qu’ils ne comprennent pas, fondent « le Frontpartij ». Une minorité des nationalistes flamands de Belgique se rangent aux côtés des Allemands en vue de créer par exemple le Conseil de Flandre.

De Pangermaanse politiek van Hitler zal ook enkele Vlaamse nationalisten aantrekken. Hitler’s Pan-German policy will also seduce a few Flemish nationalists. La politique pangermaniste d’Hitler séduira également quelques nationalistes flamands.

In de XXste eeuw zullen er meer en meer betogingen plaatsvinden. Bepaalde Vlaamse bewegingen, die zich tot rechtextremisme richten, zullen een slechte reputatie hebben in Wallonië. In the XXth century there will be more and more demonstrations. Some Flemish movements will feel attracted by the extreme right and will have a bad reputation in Wallonia. De Nederlandstaligen vrezen ook een ontwikkeling van Brussel, een stad die voor het meest Franstalig is, maar die in het Vlaamse gedeelte ligt. The Dutch-speakers are also afraid of the extension of Brussels, a city consisting mainly of French-speakers but situated in the middle of the Flemish territory! Na de tweede wereldoorlog werd aardolie meer gebruikt dan kolen. Sinds de jaren tachtig kent de Waalse staalindustrie een crisis zonder precedent, vooral wegens de Aziatische concurrentie. De Vlaamse bevolking, die nu belangrijker is, beschouwt dat ze de Belgische politiek moet leiden, die tot dan toe door de Franstaligen werd beheerst. De Walen vinden dat het hun beurt is van de rijkdom van hun buren te genieten. The Flemish population, who are now more numerous, consider they have to dominate Belgium’s politics, which so far has been ruled by the French-speaking people, who outnumbered them in the XIXth century. The Walloons then think they are the ones who must take advantage of their neighbour’s wealth. La population flamande, plus nombreuse, estime qu’elle doit désormais dominer la politique belge jusque là dirigée par les francophones majoritaires au XIXème. Nu is Vlaanderen rijk onder andere dank zij de haven van Antwerpen. De vierde haven van de wereld en de tweede van Europa! Now Flanders is rich, above all thanks to the Port of Antwerp, the fourth in the world, the second in Europe! Maintenant la Flandre est riche entre autres grâce au port d’Anvers. Quatrième port du Monde, deuxième d’Europe !

Gelukkig zijn alle partijen niet extremistisch. Onze politici proberen nu de crisis op te lossen door de staat te hervormen en iedereen (ook de Duitstaligen) een plaats te geven in onze maatschappij. Happily not all parties are extremist. Our politicians try to reform the state and give everybody, including the German-speaking people, a place in our society. Heureusement tous les partis flamands ne sont pas extrémistes, nos politiciens cherchent maintenant à résoudre la crise en réformant l’Etat Belge avec pour objectif de donner à chacun, y compris aux germanophones, une place qui lui conviendra.

Belgium has been in political limbo since a parliamentary election on June 13. The king asked acting Finance Minister Didier Reynders, a French-speaking liberal, to mediate in efforts to form a new government. Let’s hope he will find a solution and a new government will eventually be formed.
