If your organization intends to present a wreath during this ceremony please let us know by at or by fax at +32(0)56/ no later than May 13th. All the wreaths will be prepositioned with exception of the dignitaries ’ wreaths. Nevertheless, each association will be recognized during the ceremony, just as they have been during past ceremonies. All wreaths need to be delivered at the cemetery before noon on May 26th. BRIEF HISTORY OF MEMORIAL DAY: Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead". While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all. KORTE HISTORIEK - MEMORIAL DAY: Men is het lang niet over eens geweest over de oorsprong van Memorial Day, ook wel eens “Decoration Day” genoemd. Dat het terug gaat naar de Amerikaanse burgeroorlog is wel algemeen aanvaard. Het opsmukken met bloemen van graven van gesneuvelde soldaten zou zich op vele plaatsen voordoen. Eén van de eerste die ooit werd geregistreerd was in Columbus, Mississippi op 25 april Macon in Georgia, Richmond in Virginia en nog talrijke andere plaatsen hielden gelijkaardige herdenkingen op verschillende dagen. Het stadje Carbondale in Illinois liet zelfs een gedenksteen oprichten als bewijs dat daar de eerste Memorial Day plaats vond op 29 april Naderhand zouden een 25-tal plaatsen de oorsprong van Memorial Day opeisen. Drie jaar na de Amerikaanse burgeroorlog, op 5 mei 1868, besliste de opperbevelhebber van de Grand Army of the Republic, Major General John A. Logan, dat Memorial Day voortaan ieder jaar op 30 mei zou vallen. De eerste grote plechtigheid vond in 1868 dan ook plaats op Arlington National Cemetery. Het gekibbel over de opeising van wie de eerste was, zou nog tot in 1966 duren. Toen pas werd de knoop door het Amerikaans Congres doorgehakt. Niettegenstaande dat de uitverkozen datum op 5 mei 1866 bleef, verkoos President Lyndon Johnson Waterloo, NY als de officiële geboorteplaats van Memorial Day. Het gaat er eigenlijk niet om wie de eerste was, het belangrijkste is dat Memorial Day is ontstaan. Memorial Day gaat om verzoening; het gaat om met zijn allen samen te komen om voor hen die het leven lieten te gedenken.
