Levenstevredenheid Zelfdoding ideatie Zelf gerapporteerde gezondheid

9 Variabelen Schoolomgeving: Leerlingen aanvaarden me zoals ik ben
Leerkrachten tonen interesse voor mij De school is aangename plaats

10 Lage levenstevredenheid
Lage zelf gerapporteerde gezondheid Life satisfaction The Cantrill ladder is used to measure life satisfaction. Pupils have to indicate how there lives are at the moment going from 0- worst possible life to 10- best possible life. As is seen in the graph, low life satisfaction increases with age. Girls in the older age groups are more likely to indicate a low life satisfaction compared with boys of the same age. Self-rated health Self-rated health was measured with the question ‘Would you say your health is excellent, good, fair or poor?’. In the second graph, a clear linear association can be observed between having a fair or poor subjective health and age. Girls are more likely to evaluate their health as fair or poor compared with boys.

11 Zelfdoding ideatie Suicide ideation
In the Flemish version of the HBSC study; a question on thinking about suicide was included for pupils in secondary schools. The results of the pupils who have thought about suicide once or more are shown in the first graph. Girls are more likely to think about suicide than boys. As for the two previous indicators of mental well being, thinking about suicide increases with age, especially in girls. Body damaging behaviour Questions on body damaging behaviour were for the first time included in the Flemish HBSC-survey. Because of the sensitive character of the questions, the questions are only included in the surveys for the two last years of secondary school. It was found that 11.2% of the boys and 22.2% of the girls have already deliberately took too much pills or tried to damage themselves in another way.

Three indicators of school environment are selected: students accept me as I am, school is a nice place, and teachers show interest in me. By using the Freedman-Schatzkin method, the mediating role of school variables is studied. The results show that the relation between the SES indicators and indicators of well being decreases significantly when taking acceptance of students into account. The variable ‘school is a nice place’ plays a mediating role between suicide ideation and FAS, and between life satisfaction and Perceived family wealth. The variable ‘teachers show interest’ plays only a mediating role between suicide ideation and FAS.
