Modernization is characterized as economic development and progress through industrialization and is associated by urbanization and mass communication. Postmodernization represents a later stage of societal development that emphasizes human choice and self-expression. A negative score on the modernization dimension represents traditional views and values: obedience to traditional authority, usually religious authority, and adherence to family and communal obligations.
