Je hebt deze opdracht naar behoren uitgevoerd als je beleefd in het Engels aan een ander kunt duidelijk maken dat iets verboden is (in dit geval ‘roken’). Je gebruikt vaste standaardzinnen, kunt gedeeltelijk herhalen wat iemand gezegd heeft om te bevestigen dat je de ander hebt begrepen Je uitspraak is wel gekleurd door een accent en af en toe spreek je een woord nog verkeerd uit.

Situation You are travelling abroad. You are in a place where it is not allowed to smoke. This is clearly indicated by signs. Next to you, someone has lit a cigarette. You decide to try and convince this person that smoking in this place is not allowed.

1)Think of a list of 15 Dutch words that have to do with smoking. Now translate them into English. You can use the following link to look up the translation (but a conventional dictionary may work just as well…) http://dictionaries.travlang.com/DutchEnglish http://dictionaries.travlang.com/DutchEnglish 2) You can also use an English – English dictionary. Assignment You will have to record a conversation between you and someone who believes he has the right to smoke. First, think of the situation in which the ‘forbidden’ smoking occurs. Are you on a train, in a restaurant, in a hospital or……? Next make a list of possible arguments you could use to support your view that the ‘no-smoking’ sign should be observed. You may find it useful to go to the following site for some info on the subject of smoking: click here.here. Finally work out some arguments why the other person might be in desperate need of a cigarette. Together, try to work out a solution for the problem. For some extra language input, see the final page!
