1 Simple en continuous tenses
Met of zonder –ing. Alle tijden kun je in het Engels met of zonder –ing-form maken: I sleep… I slept… I had slept… I will sleep… I am sleeping… I was sleeping… I had been sleeping… I will be sleeping…

to BE + ww+-ING I am working; I was working; I will be working; enz) Moet je gebruiken als je wilt zeggen dat je iets op een bepaald moment aan het doen bent; je beschrijft een handeling When I arrived, they were already playing poker. 3 Kun je gebruiken bij ergernis He is always complaining!!

4 Je kunt be+ -ing NIET gebruiken bij:
-onverwachte/zeer korte gebeurtenissen He fell/was falling down the stairs. We were working, when a truck ran/was running into our living-room. -de ww.: know, see, smell, feel, want, wish, mean, believe, love, like, think(=vinden) I know / am knowing her. She thinks / is thinking he's smart. I love / am loving it. Pas op: I think/am thinking about a chess-problem. Another reason not to visit MD too often !

5 Past Simple/Past Continuous
Past Continuous: Bij een handeling in het verleden die een tijdje bezig is. Vaak kom je Past Cont. en Past Simple in 1 zin tegen: They were watching/watched a film on TV, when the news was arriving/arrived. Everybody was reading/read quietly, when suddenly he was bursting/burst into the room. (‘arrived’ en ‘burst’ gebeuren ineens) Verklaar: He was always smoking. Weren’t you going to the party .

6 I am working/Iwork Where's Tom? -He [do] his homework. He [do] so every afternoon at the same time.' Where's Mrs Stuart?' - 'She [prepare] dinner.' Mother always [have] a cup of tea at three o'clock. Have you any idea who [make] that terrible noise? My sister [ring] me up every day.

7 I was working/I worked I (read) a book when suddenly the light (go) out She [fall] while she [run] after a bus. When I [go] out the sun [shine]. The maid [lay] the table for dinner while you [wash] your hands. Large crowds [wait] at the station when the Prime Minister [arrive]. While you [play] the piano I [write] a letter. The ship [sink], so all the passengers [jump] into the boats.
