We focus on one particularly powerful link that is based on the role of children’s psychological explanations in their learning. Psychological explanations involve explaining persons’ actions and lives as the causes and consequences of their mental states.We begin by showing that psychological explanations are central to children’s developing theories of mind—they are part of the mechanism for development in this domain.We then review theory and data suggesting that psychological explanations are also critically important for learning and being taught more generally. 1. The phrase “theory of mind” refers to our everyday understanding of persons in terms of their inner psychological states. We all live in families and communities constantly interacting with one another, and so we develop numerous conceptions about people, their behaviors, interactions, relationships, and lives. The claim behind research on theory of mind is that our everyday understanding of persons—our folk psychology—is fundamentally mentalistic. We typically think of people in terms of their mental states—their beliefs, desires, hopes, goals, and emotions. In fact, even young children rapidly acquire basic abilities to see self and others as wanting, feeling, thinking beings (Flavell & Miller, 1998).
