The vision of Sea Shepherd
Conservationism: biodiversity has intrinsic value and should be preserved. Human arrogance to think that only human species is important. Animal rights: every sentient being has the basic right not to be used as merely means to our ends. Human arrogance to think that only humans have this basic right. Biocentrism: all life is precious!

Universal respect, compassion and love
Biocentric altruism: Universal respect, compassion and love Expand the moral community Equality, antidiscrimination, no opression Egocentrism (egoism, greed) Etnocentrism (racism, sexism, classism) human rights feminism socialism Antropocentrism (speciesism, human arrogance) animal rights, veganism Pathocentrism Biocentrism
87
Biocentrisch altruism: universal respect
Biocentrism: All life is precious: never underestimate the intrinsic value (the opposite of use value) of living beings Dignity and respect for all life The basic right of living and sentient beings: Sentient beings have the right not to be used as merely means to our ends (basic and luxury needs) Living beings have the right not to be killed for luxury needs. This results into voluntary simplicity (sobriety) and veganism.
88
Biocentric altruism: Universal respect
Respect for diversity: between humans, cultures, species, ecosystems,… Diversity has intrinsic value -> Protect biodiversity and indigenous people. All species have equal intrinsic value -> Protect vulnerable, endangered species.
89
Biocentrisch altruism: universal compassion
The original position Do you want to switch your position with the other (the whale,…)? Theory of justice: maximin-principle The position of the being with the least welfare should be maximized
90
Ecological justice Two big problems: Ecological Footprint:
-extreme poverty and inequality -human induced mass extinction Ecological Footprint: Belgian: 5 ha/capita World average: 2,2 ha/capita Carrying capacity (fair earth share): <1,6 ha/capita
91
Ecological justice Scientific development is not enough. There is no “miracle technology” that is biologically-physically possible, financially-economically possible, ecologically sustainable, ethically responsible, quickly developable Not proven to exist
92
Ecological justice Overconsumption and overpopulation
-> less pregnancies and less consumption -> own free choice *ecological footprint lower than carrying capacity *create fair conditions for a voluntary limitation of pregnancies.
93
Biocentric altruism: Universal love
Solidarity, respect and compassion with all life Even with people doing terrible things Like a mother loving her son
94
Non-violence Non-violence versus effectivity
Use universal love as a moral guide Protect the rights of victims Protect the moral self of perpetrators
95
Inner liberation No ego, no attachment to material possesion,
No negative emotions (greed, envy, guilt, hatred, anger, fear, frustrations,…) Self-discipline (eco-warriors)
96
Biocentric altruism A commitment to protect all vulnerable life, Not with greed or ego, but with care, courage and compassion
97
Love does not burn others, it burns itself.
