6 Today’s Backup and Recovery Business Challenge
Protecting growing volumes of data on physical and virtual systems Scalable data and system protection from desktop to server from one console Business Challenge The Backup Solution New IT requirements need the latest technologies Unmatched features to restore critical data in seconds Today many of you are facing many critical data protection challenges in your environment.  Challenges: Many of you may be looking at, growing data volumes and challenged with protecting these not just across your physical server environments, but also across new virtual environments, whether you're looking at leveraging VMware or, say, Hyper-V. We want to talk to you about how you can do that from a very comprehensive approach, as well as ensure that you can meet your recovery times with the limited budget constraints that you may be dealing with today, as well as ensuring that not only are you leveraging a process today for your data protection, but also ensuring that you have a process in place for a complete disaster recovery. What if you lost that entire server? Would you be able to bring that server back up quickly and efficiently? Or, do you have any type of offsite data protection strategy in place today? What happens if your local destination experiences a disaster, do you have your data in multiple locations and can you quickly restore that information? Solution: Symantec wants to ensure you can easily scale your data and system protection strategy across those physical and virtual server environments. We want to help you, as an administrator, be able to quickly restore back those critical applications as well as the granular data within those Microsoft applications, like an active directory user preference, or an Exchange , for example, and how we can do that with the limited budgets that we have today. As well as ensure that as you deploy your data protection solution, you can also ensure that not only do you have solid data protection, but also complete system recovery as well. 12 One Agent, One Backup, One Console
The Backup Solution: Backup Exec Data Protection for Virtual Environments One Agent, One Backup, One Console Reduce Cost and Management of Multiple Products - complete data protection for physical and virtual server environments from a single console Reduce Cost of Multiple Agents - backup unlimited Windows and Linux Guest VM’s to disk or tape with a single agent per ESX/vSphere Host or Hyper-V Host Reduce Storage Resources - granular file-level and image-level recovery from a single online image-level backup Backup Exec 12.5 Media Server + Virtual Agent Speaker Notes: With the release of Backup Exec 12.5 we inintroduced new, comprehensive data protection for both VMware Virtual Infrastructure and Microsoft Hyper-V environments. Backup Exec 12.5 eliminates the need for customers to maintain a disparate set of data protection tools for both physical and virtual environments—a key value proposition for customers trying to reduce complexity in their environments. In addition, unlike backup solutions designed for pure virtual environments, Backup Exec 12.5 supports backing up virtual machines to disk, tape, and the “cloud” via SPN Online Storage [North America only]. The Agent for VMware Virtual Infrastructure and Agent for Microsoft Virtual Servers (which includes Hyper-V) automatically discover and back up unlimited guest machines per physical host environment. The per-physical-host licensing model is designed for Backup Exec’s high-velocity channel model— making it easier for partners and customers to do business with Symantec. It eliminates the complexity of traditional licensing models tiered by number of “sockets” or “guest machines”. Backup Exec’s new virtual server agents allow both granular recover of files and folders as well as entire virtual machines via a single-pass backup. Single-pass backups eliminate the need for multiple backups of the same data for different recovery granularities. This reduces the impact of the backup process on production data and the footprint of the backup on storage resources. Additional Notes: Virtual machines protected by either AVVI and AMVS will be “crash consistent” (which guarantees the consistency of the file systems), but not “application” consistent (which guarantees that the databases and associated metafiles for applications like Exchange, SQL Server, and SharePoint are consistent). Application consistent backups still require the installation of the appropriate Backup Exec Agent in the Guest OS—note that no competitor can do any better. This is a limitation of both the VCB framework and the lack of a data protection framework for Hyper-V/MSVS. Granular recovery of files and folders inside Guest OSs require the installation of the Agent for Windows Servers (AWS) be installed in the Guest OS. AWS is only required as a mechanism to channel the recovered files and/or folders to the Guest OS file system. AWS is not required for backup to get granular recovery. AVVI uses VMWare VCB to do Off-Host backup of virtual machines. AMVS has no such capability. Virtual machines are backed up directly from production. Recovery of both VMware and Hyper-V virtual machines can only occur over the network—no SAN-based recovery is possible. 13 Efficient Backup of VMware and Hyper-V Virtual Server Environments
Backup Exec 12.5: NEW Comprehensive Data Protection for VMware and Hyper-V Systems Efficient Backup of VMware and Hyper-V Virtual Server Environments Comprehensive Backup With the introduction of two new virtual agents for VMware and Hyper-V, customers now have an easy to manage, single point of control for their virtual server environment. Backup Exec integrates with VMware Virtual Center, allowing a great degree of control over the management of data protection in virtual environments and provides automatic detection and views of the entire virtual infrastructure. If you have a single ESX host environment or Hyper-V environment, no matter how many guests or how much memory you have on this machine, we have a single price and you can protect unlimited guest machines with the hardware and resources you have been given – this has changed the landscape for the virtual business. We leverage VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) technology and Microsoft VSS technology to reduce the time and challenge it takes administrators to configure a backup job- now a single backup job of the host environment can be easily configured and run through Backup Exec and provides granular recovery of files and folders or entire guest machines in seconds, previously this set-up process required hours of scripting and an expertise in virtual instructors. As you can see, granular recovery is just a click away…. Additional background for speaker: Virtual Server Backup and Recovery Challenges prior to BE 12.5: Administrators and companies who have not had the experience of recovering a Guest virtual machines using basic backup and recovery tools will face several limitations recovering their data with these older backup tools designed only for physical systems including; Having to install a backup agent inside of each Guest virtual machine or on the ESX server directly – now solved with BE 12.5 Recovery of a single file typically requires a long restore of the entire Guest virtual machine – now solved with BE 12.5 Separate backups for system level vs. individual file level recovery – now solved with BE 12.5 Taking Guest virtual machines off-line during backup in order to protect them completely – now solved with BE12.5 Ensuring applications running inside of the Guest virtual machines can be recovered- now solved with BE 12.5 Having to use separate backup products for physical vs. virtual machines – now solved with BE 12.5 Backup Exec 12.5 for Windows Servers Backup Exec 12.5 13 13

17 The Unique Power of Granular Recovery Technology
Recovery of Exchange - Eliminate mailbox backups forever and meet recovery time objectives with Continuous Protection! Recovery Of SharePoint - Individual documents, sites, list items in seconds! Recovery Of Active Directory - Individual users or attributes of users without multiple reboots! So is you business leveraging the unique power of Backup Exec Granular Recovery Technology? This is a patent-pending technology that is unique to Backup Exec and was introduced with Backup Exec 11b and over the years we've added additional enhancements to this technology with the release of Backup Exec 12 and also with So what this truly provides, is through the agent for Exchange, the agent for Active Directory, and the agent for SharePoint, you have the unique capability to run a full database backup (or a single-pass backup) of your environments. And from that backup, be able to go open up that backup set and easily restore individual items – including individual s, mailboxes, documents, SharePoint sites and AD user preferences. Now, this truly is unique in this marketplace today, and this saves you, as an administrator, time from a recovery standpoint. It is much more efficient, because you can easily go in and search for what you need and easily recover it. Plus, from an Exchange perspective, you can eliminate running a second-pass backup - you no longer need to do a database backup and a mailbox backup. You literally just run that Exchange backup today, at the database level, and you can go in and restore individual s, mailboxes, etcetera, that you need to. Now, that means you no longer need to invest that administration time in managing that mailbox backup – and you reduce the storage cost of a second mailbox backup. 18 Meet Recovery Time Objectives-
Simple To Configure – Easy To Manage Exchange Servers Backup Exec 12.5 Server Disk Storage Tape Library LAN So to give you a perspective of how this works today, for those of you running tape, this is a -- the Granular Recovery Technology is a disk-based technology. So for those of you who are leveraging tape today, look at this and understand that there is a huge value of implementing an additional disk space solution to complement all of your backups in a Backup Exec backup and recovery scenario. So today, you can run, leveraging granular recovery, a single-pass backup.  Click Now you can run that to disk, or you can run that directly to tape. That's up to you. Click We recommend a staged disk-to-disk-to-tape scenario in that sense. And what that provides you and what that allows you to leverage is that Granular Recovery Technology so that if you have, for example, an application failure, you can easily -- either from tape or from disk -- restore that entire application quickly and efficiently. Administration Console Backup Exec 12.5 for Windows Servers Backup Exec 12.5 18

19 Meet Recovery Time Objectives-
Simple To Configure – Easy To Manage Exchange Servers Backup Exec 12.5 Server Disk Storage Tape Library LAN Click Plus to ensure you can truly meet those strict recovery time objectives, Backup Exec provides you with the capability to go into that single-pass backup, open that up, and restore and view and browse individual items.  Click So you can go in and restore a SharePoint document, a SharePoint list item, an Exchange , and Active Director user preference, whatever you need. Now, that capability of granular recovery is open and available from that disk backup. Now if that data has already gone off to tape, you would then take that database backup, stage that back to disk, and from that disk backup, you would be able to crack that information open and restore that item.    The power of what granular recovery capabilities provide is truly the fact that in a disaster, in an even where you've lost some critical data and that information is still residing on that disk backup, you literally can go in and, within seconds, restore that data without having to do that full database recovery, which is huge. And that is a unique capability that you're going to find exclusive with Backup Exec 12.5 and, specifically, the agents for Exchange, Active Directory, and with SharePoint. 23 Small Business Landscape Risks = Opportunity
Most experience frequent outages 76 percent live in regions susceptible to disasters Outages in past year: Average of three (hackers, power outage, natural disaster) Yet almost half (47 percent) have no formal DR plan Backups are inconsistent Only 60 percent of company or customer data is backed-up Only one in five (23 percent) back-up daily! SMBs acknowledge a disaster would cause data loss More than half expect they would lose at least 40 percent of their data In the 2009 SMB Disaster Preparedness Survey, Symantec found a large discrepancy between how SMBs perceive their disaster readiness and their actual level of preparedness. The data also suggests SMB downtime costs their customers tens of thousands of dollars each year. As a result, the findings show that SMBs can – and often do – lose business as a direct result of being unprepared for disasters. And according to a survey by Rubicon Consulting in 35% of SMBs have no server backup solution, are you in this category? 2009: Symantec SMB Disaster Preparedness Survey Backup Exec 12.5 23

24 Cost Prevention The Gap Repair Which bill would you rather pay?
THE GAP is the difference between the cost of the Repair and the cost of the Prevention. Every business is going to be presented with one of these two bills in some form or other. The cost of the repair is always dramatically more expensive (money, time, reputation) than the cost of the prevention. One estimate puts the average cost to remediate a data breach at $6.7M for U.S. companies. Admittedly, this could represent the cost to a large enterprise, but what if it’s 10% - $670,000? Or 1% - $67,000? Still an enormous amount of money when compared to the cost of prevention. The cost of the repair also represents one of the base fears of a IT Director— that their systems would be compromised and the blame put on them for something they didn’t prepare for or account for. The PROBLEM lies in the nature of the threat. It’s quiet, it doesn’t announce its impending arrival. There are no sirens or bells. IT’S NOT A ROCK THROUGH THE WINDOW. Bottomline: too often it’s easy to ignore the danger when other things are clamoring for a businessperson’s attention. Technology salespeople can be accused of hyperbole sometimes, but not in this statement: 100% of the companies that need the Repair wish they had the Prevention in place the day before. Without Exception. If the VP of IT, IT Director, or even the Business Owner for small businesses fully understand The Gap, they will run to write the check for the Prevention. Backup Exec 12.5 24

30 Provides Simple Data Retrieval
Local Local The first method that we’ll talk about for enhanced data recovery capabilities includes new file and folder level backup and recovery. <Hit Enter or Click For Build> Just like with Recovery Points, you capture a file/folder backup and save it to any local disk storage device. Then from the Home Page of Backup Exec System Recovery, select Recover Files and you can easily search for the file or folder you wish to recover, much like you would search for a file using Windows Explorer. Using a file and folder backup is especially useful if you have limited disk space for storing recovery points. For example, if you have a set of files that you change on a regular basis, such as a Word document, you can define a file and folder backup that captures only Word files. When you select a file and folder backup as your backup type, you can choose to back up all files of a specific type or you can select a specific folder and have all files in that folder backed up. Another method do recover data is through our new integration with Google Desktop. Let’s walk through how this works: First, users capture a recovery point of a system with indexing support checked and store that recovery point to any disk storage device Next they open up Google Desktop that has already been installed and configured Then users can quickly search for and retrieve any file or folder from indexed recovery points. There is no special software required Making it easy for users to use as it has the familiar web-browser interface they are used to with Google which means that there is no special training required. And finally a note that this is a Desktop feature Another way that users can restore data is by using Backup Exec Retrieve. First, users capture a recovery point of a system with indexing support checked and store that recovery point to any disk storage device. Much the same way as with Google Desktop. Then they open the Backup Exec Retrieve Interface And they can quickly search for, and restore, any file or folder from indexed recovery points It’s a simple “Google”-like search And same as with the Google Desktop Integration, there is no training required No special software required It can be used on desktops or servers And this functionality requires Backup Exec System Recovery Manager which we’ll talk about in more detail in a moment Protected Server Disk Storage Backup Exec 12.5 30
