3 Introductie GPS NAVSTAR - US Governement’s global positioning system Betaald en gecontroleerd door de US Department of Defence (DOD) Control Segment, Space Segment en een User Segment Het control segment : een netwerk van grondstations Het space segment bestaat uit 24 satellieten (SV’s) in 6 banen (4 per baan) die elk in 12 uur de aarde omcirkelen. Deze configuratie levert de gebruiker zicht op 5 tot 8 satellieten overal ter wereld. De user segment : de GPS ontvanger

5 De tijd dat een individueel radiosignaal er over doet om van een SV bij een GPS ontvanger te komen, bepaalt de afstand van de GPS tot de desbetreffende SV. Deze afstand is de straal van een bol, gecentreerd om de betreffende SV. Wanneer de posities van de SV’s bij de GPS ontvanger bekend zijn, kan aan de hand van 3 SV’s een 2D positionering (X & Y) bepaald worden. Minimaal 4 SV’s zijn nodig voor een 3D positionering (X, Y & Z)
