2 Foliumzuur en neuraalbuisdefecten 1991 MRC trial: 70% bescherming door extra foliumzuur, van maand voor conceptie tot 3 maanden erna.

3 Foliumzuur: al voor de conceptie! Als zwangere voor eerste zwangerschapscontrole komt (12 wk gestatieduur), is organogenese al voorbij Bij 2 weken over tijd bijv. is de sluiting van de rug al voltooid (of ligt de aanleg voor anencefalie/ spina bifida al vast).
