3 Analyse deel 1 (pagina 154-159) A1 = Terugkijkende ik-verteller, EF-w - “Although, at the time, so strong a gale was blowing landward that (...)” (pag. 155) - “In a few minutes more, there came over the scene another radical alteration.” (pag. 156) B1 = Interne interpreterende focalisator PF (ik)-nw C1 = Oude man; Maelström, gedachten en gevoelens - “... mentioning it to the guide, I was rather surprised to hear him say that, although it was the view almost universally entertained of the subject by the Norwegians, it nevertheless was not his own.” (pag. 159)

4 Analyse deel 2 (pagina 160-171) A2 = Terugkijkende ik-verteller, tevens EF-w - “"It is now within a few days of three years since what I am going to tell you occurred. It was on the tenth of July, 18 (...)”” (pag. 161) B2 = interne interpreterende focalisator PF (oude man van vroeger)-nw C1 = Maelströmafdaling, zijn broers, gedachten en gevoelens “I never felt deeper grief than when I saw him [zijn broer] attempt this act --although I knew he was a madman when he did it --a raving maniac through sheer fright. I did not care, however, to contest the point with him. I thought it could make no difference whether either of us held on at all; so I let him have the bolt, and went astern to the cask. ” (pag. 166)

5 Focalisatieniveaus In dit verhaal hebben we te maken met een ingebedde vertelling. Met andere woorden, een ‘story in een story’. Externe focalisator (A1, EF1) delegeert de focalisatie aan een interne focalisator (B1, PF2) die de focalisatie vervolgens aan een ander personage delegeert (B2, PF3)

6 Spanning “Wanneer tenslotte, lezer en personage beiden op de hoogte zijn van het antwoord, is er geen spanning.” (pag. 120) Door de ingebedde vertelling weten we al dat de ‘oude man’ het zal overleven. Toch is er sprake van een bepaald gevoel van spanning op het moment dat hij aan het afdalen is.

7 Interessante structuur (1) De overkoepelende verteller blijft A1. Zo voegt de verteller een noot toe aan een opmerking die de oude man maakt. “He explained to me --although I have forgotten the explanation -- how what I observed was, in fact, the natural consequence of the forms of the floating fragments --and showed me how it happened that a cylinder, swimming in a vortex, offered more resistance to its suction, and was drawn in with greater difficulty than an equally bulky body, of any form whatever.*” (pag. 169) *See Archimedes, "De Incidentibus in Fluido." --lib.2.

8 Interessante structuur (2) Toch eindigt het verhaal met verteller A2. Opvallend genoeg slaat ook de titel van het verhaal op de story van A2. Daarnaast moet nog opgemerkt worden dat A2 niet waarneembaar is voor zijn broers, omdat ze zijn gedachten en gevoelens op dat moment niet konden waarnemen. Oftewel, het is toch wel een vreemde gedachte dat deze nu wel waarneembaar zijn voor B2 die nu luistert naar de story.

9 Discussie “I looked dizzily and beheld a wide expanse of ocean (…) To the right and left, as far as the eye could reach, there lay outstretched, like ramparts of the world, lines of horridly black and beetling cliff.” (pag. 155) Wanneer is EF1 aan het woord en wanneer PF2? Of is er hier sprake van EF1-PF2?

10 Kunnen we hier nog wat mee? EF= Externe focalisatie?? Anonieme instantie buiten het verhaal.... “ (...) “have no other cause than the collision of waves rising and falling, at flux and reflux, against a ridge of rocks and shelves, which confines the water so that it precipitates itself like a cataract; and thus the higher the flood rises, the deeper must the fall be, and the natural result of all is a whirlpool or vortex, the prodigious suction of which is sufficiently known by lesser experiments." --These are the words of the Encyclopaedia Britannica.” (Pag. 159)
