Een voorbeeld The biggest civil engineering project in the Netherlands since the Delta Works, was completed on May 22nd 2013, under budget within time constraints! So looking at the project from this perspective you could say the Maasvlakte 2 was a success! But let’s compare it with two other well known Dutch civil projects …

15 Een voorbeeld Let’s have a glance at some developments that are occurring at this moment in time …. 3D printing That makes it possible to prints pots and pans – but now already also printing food and body parts – printing an ears! With 3D printers printing 3D printers …. And at this moment an actual Canal House in Amsterdam is being printed! Just imagine for a moment how this could impact transporting goods …

Een voorbeeld The Port of Rotterdam and the maritime container: The rise and fall of Rotterdam’s hinterland ( ) Klara Paardenkoper-Süli And who knows her? Tomorrow morning Klara Paardenkoper defends her thesis on future developments of the Port of Rotterdam (interested – go to the Erasmus University in Rotterdam). She has done extensive research and concludes that the distributing area of the Port of Rotterdam has shrunk and will shrink even further. Caused by for instance by an industrial focus that’s moved from the Ruhrgebied to the south of Germany. And that the economical growth of Eastern Europe is creating opportunities for the German ports to rise and grow. Of course we already have a great connection by railway – the Betuwelijn – but its not a complete coincidence the Germans have lost interest to realise the German connection.

Supposed to be completed in 2026 … To be paid for by gifts. Sydney opera house: - Planned to open in 1963 for a 7 million dollar budget. Grand opening in 1973 – with 103 million dollar costs. The roof is (still) leaking and there still are acoustic problems So based upon these Dutch and international comparisons, you could conclude the Maasvlakte was an all-out success looking at it from a budget and time perspective. But we do not start projects just to burn money and kill time?! Aren’t we?!
