20 Marking Criteria Distinction (70% or higher): Merit class (60-69%)
This class of pass is awarded when the essay reflects a breadth of reading coupled with an acute analytical facility and an exemplary skill in presenting an argument in the proper academic form. Essays in the upper range of this class (80% or higher) may make an original academic contribution to the subject under consideration. The argument must have been presented in the proper academic form and display skill and enterprise in the assembly of a bibliography. Merit class (60-69%) This class of pass is awarded when the essay reveals that the student has conveyed a good range of reading and has been able to distil out from it the main arguments of the authors under consideration. The essay further puts forward a sound argument which shows good analytical skills and critical thought. The argument must have been presented in the proper academic form and display competent skill in the putting together of a bibliography. Pass (40-59%) This class of pass requires of students that they display a reasonable understanding of the core literature and an ability to attempt an independent analysis of the material read even if the analysis is less than complete. The essay will be weaker in its presentation of the argument and analytical content. The essay must be presented in proper academic form and demonstrate a working ability to assemble a bibliography
