Big Science

In 1985 is Dutch Scientific opgericht met het doel haar leden te helpen met het verwerven van opdrachten van CERN Sinds 2000 is daar ITER bij gekomen ITER-NL heeft dat overgenomen Beide instituten hebben een actieve ILO Er is een nu groot bestand aan bedrijven die belangstelling hebben voor opdrachten van dit soort wetenschappelijke instituten De projecten van deze instituten zijn kostbaar en hebben een lange doorlooptijd. Continuïteit is dus een groot probleem

Voor het bedrijfsleven is het wetenschappelijk onderzoek niet het belangrijkst, zij halen hun uitdaging uit de daarvoor nodige apparatuur. Per definitie is die apparatuur grensoverschrijdend. De instituten zijn afhankelijk van de industrie en stellen hoge eisen daaraan. Qualificaties zijn noodzakelijk, maar kunnen alleen in stand worden gehouden door voortdurend gebruik Continuïteit is noodzakelijk en moet dus behaald wordt door naar zoveel mogelijk soorten onderzoek te kijken: –Deeltjesfysica –Fusieonderzoek –Astronomie (optisch en radio) –Light sources –Free Electron Lasers

Grote wetenschappelijke projecten worden door de hoge kosten in wereldwijde samenwerking gerealiseerd. Landen die veel betalen willen het project binnen hun landsgrenzen. Nederland kent weinig van dergelijke instituten, je moet dus tenminste Europawijd gaan kijken. Om te beginnen naar Europese instituten. Een aantal daarvan werken samen in Eiroforum, andere vormen hun eigen netwerk. Daarna naar grote nationale instituten.

LHC

clic The Compact LInear Collider (CLIC) study, an international collaboration is working on a concept for a machine to collide electrons and positrons (anti- electrons) head on at energies up to several TeV. The aim is to use accelerating radio-frequency (RF) structures and a two-beam concept to produce accelerating fields as high as 100 MV/m to reach a nominal total energy of 3 TeV, while keeping the size and cost of the project within reach. The CLIC test facility, CTF3, provides the electron beam for the studies. In the two-beam acceleration concept, the high RF power to accelerate the main beam is extracted from a second high-intensity relativistic electron beam, the so- called ‘drive beam’ that runs parallel to the main beam.

ITER

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory, one of the world's top research institutions, is dedicated to basic research in the molecular life sciences. EMBL is funded by public research monies from 20 member states Research at EMBL is conducted by approximately 85 independent groups covering the spectrum of molecular biology. The Laboratory has five units: the main Laboratory in Heidelberg, and outstations in Hinxton near Cambridge (the European Bioinformatics Institute), Grenoble, Hamburg, and Monterotondo near Rome. The cornerstones of EMBL's mission are: to perform basic research in molecular biology, to train scientists, students and visitors at all levels, to offer vital services to scientists in the member states, and to develop new instruments and methods in the life sciences, and technology transfer.

European Extremely Large Telescope

Institut Laue Langevin The Institut Laue-Langevin is an international research centre at the leading edge of neutron science and technology. The Institute operates one of the most intense neutron sources in the world, feeding intense beams of neutrons to a suite of 40 high-performance instruments that are constantly upgraded. As a service institute the ILL makes its facilities and expertise available to visiting scientists. Every year, some 1200 researchers from over 40 countries visit the ILL.

Deutsche Elektronen- Synchrotron DESY is a publicly funded national research center. Based in Hamburg, the center also has a branch institute in Zeuthen in the state of Brandenburg. The Federal Government bears 90% of the budget ( Federal Ministry for Education, Science, Research and Technology ) and the City of Hamburg or the federal state of Brandenburg the remaining 10% members of staff

Free Electron Laser Röntgenstraling X-FEL wordt gebouwd bij DESY. Bouw en exploitatie wordt ondergebracht in een aparte GmbH

Max-Planck Instituut. Bouwt in Greifswald een experimentele stellarator genaamd Wendelstein 7-X. Een alternatief voor de tokamak zoals ITER

HiPER is a proposed European High Power laser Energy Research facility dedicated to demonstrating the feasibility of laser driven fusion as a future energy source.

En dan zijn er nog European Spallation Source die in Zweden gebouwd gaat worden. Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut dat van plan is een hard UV Free Electron Laser te bouwen. Tenslotte zijn de bedrijven die dit soort werk aankunnen ook in staat een bijdrage te leveren aan kernreactoren.

wens Het zou mooi zijn als de huidige Industrial Liaison Officers van CERN/ESRF en ITER hun opgebouwde kennis van het Nederlandse bedrijfsleven konden gebruiken om toegang te krijgen tot al deze bovengenoemde projecten.
