Methodologie van de Oostenrijkse School Oosprong: methodenstreit  Duitse Historische School:  Er bestaan geen constante relaties, alles is van z’n tijd afhankelijk. Een economische ‘wetmatigheid’ is misschien geldig in 19 e eeuws Duitsland maar niet in 20 e eeuws Frankrijk. Methodologie van de Oostenrijkse School a) Economische theorie: A priori synthetisch (purely deductive) ;  Pure logica is niet voldoende (synthetisch) en observaties zijn onnodig (a priori)  Axioma + empirisch gedetermineerde assumpties (bv. werk is niet leuk, proposities: zie Boettke)  Analyse van economische systemen vb. een ruil is altijd wederzijds (subjectief) voordelig  ONTESTBAAR; het tegengestelde beweren is zichzelf tegenspreken (Kant)  Mentale tools: o Method of Contrast (Evenly Rotating Economy) o Robinson Crusoe Economics b) Economische geschiedenis: Uitgebreide empirie (data) + economische theorie als tool  In tegenstelling tot mainstream meer focus op intenties: ruwe survey-data, interpretatie etc.

Beperkingen van economische theorie A priori deductie: niet empirisch verifieerbaar/falsifieerbaar worden Ceteris Paribus Vele factoren leiden samen tot een uitkomst mate waarin een factor significant is = empirische vraag Bv: verschuiving van lasten op arbeid naar lasten op toegevoegde waarde  netto positief of netto negatief?

Hedendaagse evolutie Succes van heterodoxe scholen/ideeën  shift in overtuigingen; kritiek op aannames zoals extreme rationaliteit/evenwicht, instituties worden belangrijker etc. maar: om gepubliceerd te geraken moet de vorm nog steeds voldoen aan die “wetenschappelijke” perceptie (enkel) als een heterodoxe theorie herformuleerd kan worden in formele termen en kan getest worden met conventionele statistische technieken, dan maakt de theorie kans
