2 CIW en Erin Manning Communicatie is meer dan wat er gebeurt in taal/the speech act: in vele gevallen onttrekt het zich eraan. Het bestuderen van communicatie betekent dat we ons moeten interesseren in alle wijzen waarop in een praktijk gecommuniceerd kan worden

3 Manning on Touch Begint met het zich verhouden tot Butler: The sexing of bodies is a process that takes place though the (political) regulations of norms established in and through language. (87) Maar is niet noodzakelijk goed:“… the signifying act delimits and contours the body that it claims to find prior to any and all signification. (85) Manning: what the body can do exceeds language’s significability. (86) Hoe? Middels the politics of touch.

4 Wat gebeurt er met het aanraken? Aanraken is beweging: “when I touch you, I re-place both you and myself within the governing system of the body politic, drawing to our attention the limit-space between your skin, my skin and the world… I touch the you that you will become in response to my reaching forward.” (87) Argentinian Tango: leader and follower bewegen allebei volgens hoe de ander zal gaan bewegen, geen hierarchie en zeker geen sexuele hierarchie.

5 Gender versus Engendering Engendering=to generate=individuation (Simondon)=to potentialize matter Engenderings are metastable systems, they are bodies in formation “A politics of touch is composed of engendered and engendering bodies. To engender is to explore the potentialities of form and matter at the level of individuations rather than identities”(90)

6 Towards Sexuality “Positing engendering as my point of departure, what I seek to explore is how human sex practices (and adjacent politics of identity) are embedded in our historical and cultural roots as mementos to practices of segregation, imposed difference, essential traits.”(92) Naar een ontogenese in plaats van naar een ontologie

7 Endosymbiosis Margulis zoekt een horizontale evolutie. Dus: niet vertrekken vanuit (heterosexuele) reproductie (zoals Darwinisme) maar symbiose laten zien, Gedefinieerde genders en species die zich sexueel voortplantten zijn zich slechts 1 biljoen jaar geleden gaan ontwikkelen. Daarvoor hadden bacterien al 2000 miljoen jaar chemische en sociale evolutie erop zitten. Margulis: “The Second Law of Thermodynamics rather, than sex itself, is the physical basis of our evolutionary focus on copulation and sex acts.” (98) (= van warmte naar arbeid)

8 The Politics of Touch Vertrekkend vanuit symbiose kunnen we de wereld denken en leven volgens de symbiotische processen die “wij” altijd al zijn. In de symbiose, in de engendering, kunnen we vóór iedere (talige, identificerende) vorm van gender zijn, en daar ook volgens communiceren.

10 Becoming Simondon: “The individual is the reality of a constituting relation, not the interiority of a constituted term” (107) Iedere vorm van relatie doet daarmee noodzakelijk geweld aan identiteit “The politics of touch asks us to be willing to lose our balance, momentarily, to not know in advance, to disagree” (108)
