1972 1987 1996 1948 1977 1989 2005 MAR Version: July 2007 OUR HISTORY  SES Europe (Belgium) 1948: the official establishment of the S.B.G.B. (Société Belge de Graine de Betterave Sucrière) or the ‘Belgian Company for Sugar Beet Seeds’ in Tienen by the Belgian sugar industry. The establishment of this company stemmed from the decision of the Belgian sugar manufacturers to meet the challenge of the problems of production, quality and supply of sugar beet seed which was scarce after the war. The main activity of the S.B.G.B. was processing sugar beet seed. For the actual cultivation work, the Belgium North Sea coast turned out to be the most suitable location, while for breeding, it collaborated closely with the B.I.V.B. (Belgian Institute for Beet Improvement). 1972: The business flourished and a constant effort was made to expand into new markets. In order to improve its presence in Italy, the decision was made in to merge with an Italian seed company  first mono-germ varieties. From then on, the S.B.G.B. would operate under the name SES. SES stands for: S. Société Européenne de Semences E. Europese Zaadmaatschappij S. Societa Europea del Seme 1987: In 1987, SES was taken over by the British multinational ICI (Imperial Chemical Industries). As a result, SES was able to draw upon ICI’s extensive biotechnology programme and thus able to increase its lead in this area. 1989: ICI decided to demerge a number of its activities including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and specialties along with seeds into a separate international company. This company operates under the name Zeneca. Thus was created a life-science company for high-technological and other related activities geared towards research and development and the future. SES became the European head office for Zeneca Seeds. 1996: In 1996 Zeneca and Cosun (100% owner of VanderHave) decided to merge their seed activities, creating the 5th largest seed company in the world operating under the name of Advanta. 2005: all sugar beet activity sold to Maison Florimond Desprez (France)  SESVanderHave Florimond Desprez is a family-owned French seed company with its roots in the Pévèle plain (North of France) for over six generations (°1830). Version: July 2007 OUR HISTORY The actual SESVanderHave group was created in June 2005, as a result of the merger between the Belgian company SES Europe and the Dutch VanderHave. Both companies can look back upon a long and rich tradition: the history of SES Europe goes back to 1948, for VanderHave it even goes back to 1879.
