“Alona, kijk je even na of er geen plagiaat inzit?” 1999-2003: –enkel eindwerken (226) –geen beleid, geen richtlijnen: ‘what is “crime”? what will be my “punishment”?’ Hoe ben ik te werk gegaan? –document: ‘Guidelines for writing a paper’ –follow-up sessions: van 1 naar 4 –Google/ meta-search engines (Copernic) –lijst van kenmerken van Plagiaat

Hoe ben ik te werk gegaan? Signs of Plagiarism: –Terminology & sentence structure –Citing changes within the text –Deviation from student’s level –‘A feeling of familiarity’ –Changes in font/lay-out –English: UK & US spelling mixed –Materials in the bibliography are not available locally –References are too old/ too new –Syntactic structure –Bibliography does not correspond to the course work –Difference between the ‘introduction/conclusion’ & the ‘body’ of the work –The topic is not covered –Closely resembles work of another student –Mixed reference systems –Different length of the sentences –Source of the document (properties) –Etc.

Media Hype or a Trend?

Verdere ontwikkelingen (2003-2004 en beyond): Agreeing ourselves: develop a policy Develop common definitions & set of consequence and state them in a document Make students sign an agreement POC consensus: noodzakelijk onderdeel van academische beoordeling wel beleid en basis richtlijnen voor studenten document: ‘Guidelines for writing a paper’ follow-up sessions vervangen door een verplicht onderdeel: Research Methods Seminar verplicht onderdeel invoeren: Academic Writing ‘Statement of Academic Integrity’

Hoe pakken wij het aan? (2) Educating the students: Inform students of this policy & detection tools; Provide clear definitions, examples and feed- back Record the process not the result: Progress reports, log-books, etc. –Infosessie in het begin van academiejaar –behouden van het document: ‘Guidelines for writing a paper’ – follow-up sessions vervangen door een verplicht onderdeel: Research Methods Seminar – verplicht onderdeel invoeren: Academic Writing Voor MA Thesis: –verder ontwikkelen van ‘Paper Card’: 4 stappen van schrijfproces: outline, first draft, progress report, final work –minimum van 4 contactmomenten met de promotoren – telkens handtekening voor akkoord

Hoe pakken wij het aan? (3) Detecting and dealing with plagiarism Consequently detect plagiarism and use the rules stipulated in the policy document Clear punishment –systematische detectie –verplichte elektronische controle via Turnitin van MA Thesis (vanaf 2003-2004) en van alle geschreven werken behalve klassieke schriftelijke examens (vanaf 2006- 2007) –alle plagiaat gevallen worden doorgegeven (met aanbevelingen van docent) en worden behandeld door de Examencommissie

Onze definitie: Plagiarism: the reproduction or appropriation of someone else’s work without proper attribution (in other words: passing off as one’s own the work of someone else) –In Written Works this means: Copying verbatim without any acknowledgement Incorrect paraphrasing Insufficient acknowledgement Insufficient accreditation of somebody’s ideas, work, etc. Self-plagiarism Collusion Etc.

Hoe kunnen wij Plagiaat detecteren? Elektronische detectie Copy Catch or WordCHECK Glatt Plagiarism Screening Digital Integrity EVE 2 Copying from each other (collusion) Claims to diagnose a student’s individual style of writing More commercial in nature, corporate networks, etc. (cut/paste) (‘findsame’ could be used by acad.) Internet, does not compare, does not have database (cut/paste); but performs well

Hoe kunnen wij Plagiaat detecteren? Why not Google? Google (etc.) Several search engines/ meta- search engines: www.mamma.com www.copernic.com www.mamma.com www.copernic.com The most common detection tool used by individual academics (49% occasionally, JISC) But Time consuming Slow No search engine covers more than 1 billion pages (cut/paste) No database, only current pages Does not check multiple sources (30% of students copy from several sources)

Hoe kunnen wij Plagiaat detecteren? TURNITIN: Bronnen Internet (2005): 6.1 billion pages; Paper-mills (10 million papers); recent text books of major publishers & ProQuest electronic journals Paper-mills Internet Text books

Hoe kunnen wij Plagiaat detecteren? TURNITIN: Pro & Contra Huge database (with a daily up- load rate of 4 millions pages per day) Cut & paste/ Collusion/ Paper mills Quick (1-5 minutes) User friendly Reports are clear Excellent detection performance Adds sites upon request Archive from 2001 Does not detect copy from textual material not found electronically (older text books, non-electronic journals) Detects copy against Latin script (ISO-8559-1) (not suitable for languages with different alphabet) Does not often detect electronic newspapers Not suitable for non-textual material Word substitution (words out of context) (but still can trace the origin!)

Is elektronische detectie nuttig? Op basis van TURNITIN Pitt-falls: Cannot identify the author Translations cannot be found Cannot trace old text books (but can trace them when several students use the same source & keeps it in the database) Advantages: Deterring effect Creating a world-wide database Importance for the reputation of the academics & institutions Speed of detection
