2 Chapter 1 At the pub Kate Jensen is having a drink with Max Carson. Max says he thinks Kate should have some time to rest. He invites her to come to the Netherlands to write an article on his football club. This is the last time Kate will speak to Max before his death.

Kate Jensen zit in een bar samen met Max Carson. Max vindt dat Kate er tussen uit moet. Hij nodigt haar uit om naar Nederland te komen om een artikel te schrijven over zijn voetbal club. Deze ontmoeting in de pub is de laatste keer dat Kate Max spreekt voor zijn dood.

4 Chapter 2 The past Kate is having a chat with one of her colleagues (Rick) on Max’ death. Kate tells him that Max saved her life once. She decides to go to Amsterdam to find out what happened to Max, but first she asks Balzano for his permission.

Kate is in gesprek met een van haar collega’s (Rick) over Max’ dood. Kate vertelt hem dat Max haar leven ooit heeft gered. Ze besluit naar Amsterdam te gaan om er achter te komen wat er werkelijk met Max is gebeurd, maar eerst vraagt ze Balzano om toestemming.

6 Chapter 3 Amsterdam spring
In this chapter Kate is having a drink with Elly van Praag, who works for the Dutch police. Kate describes Elly as a typical Dutch woman, who is a good cyclist, who is the daughter of a Dutch farmer and speaks English very well. Elly tells Kate that Max’ death was most probably a mugging that went wrong. Elly also tells Kate that Joop de Vries is leading the investigation and that they have found a note in Max’ pocket with the name and address of Jos van Essen.

7 In dit hoofdstuk is Kate wat gaan drinken met Elly, een Nederlandse politie agente. Kate beschrijft haar als een typisch Nederlandse vrouw, een goede fietser, een dochter van een boer en als iemand die goed Engels spreekt. Elly vertelt Kate dat Max’ dood waarschijnlijk een mislukte overval was. Ook vertelt Elly dat Joop de Vries de leiding heeft over het onderzoek en dat er een briefje in de broekzak van Max zat met daar op de naam en het adres van Jos van Essen.

8 Chapter 4 Talk with a striker
In chapter 4 Kate visits Jos van Essen, a famous retired football player of only 28. He tells Kate how he met Max and Tom and how big their roles were in his life. Kate also finds out that Max had a heart attack years ago and was taking pills for his heart. Jos explains that the reason Max had his address in his pocket, was that Jos had just moved here. When Kate leaves she notices that Jos has a lot of locks on his door.

9 In hoofdstuk 4 gaat Kate langs bij Jos van Essen, een beroemde (gepensioneerde) voetballer van nog maar 28. He vertelt Kate hoe hij Max en Tom heeft ontmoet en wat voor rol zij in zijn leven speelden. Ook komt Kate er achter dat Max een hartaanval heeft gehad een aantal jaar geleden en dat hij daar pillen voor slikte. Jos legt uit dat de reden dat Max zijn adres in z’n broekzak had zitten, was omdat Jos net was verhuisd. Als Kate weggaat merkt ze op dat Jos wel veel sloten op zijn deur heeft.

10 Chapter 5 Dinner at Sluizer’s
Kate decides to visit the place Max was killed. She enters a café where she meets Bert. After her visit at the café she goes back to her hotel. The next morning Elly calls her to make an appointment that morning. Elly tells Kate that the Murder Squad think they have found Max’ killer. They found Max’ wallet in the apartment of the suspect.

Kate besluit om langs de locatie te gaan waar Max is gedood. Eenmaal daar gaat ze een café binnen waar ze ene Bert ontmoet. Na haar bezoek aan het café gaat ze terug naar haar hotel. De volgende morgen belt Elly haar om een afspraak te maken voor diezelfde morgen. Elly vertelt Kate dat het onderzoeks teams denkt de moordenaar van Max te hebben gevonden. De portemonnee van Max is namelijk gevonden in het huis van de verdachte.

12 Chapter 6 Bert’s Story Bert phones Kate to make an appointment. He has some information on Max’ death. He says a ‘friend of his’ saw some guy throwing Max’ body out of the car (Max was already dead then) and stabbing him right away. Bert also tells Kate that the wallet was probably stolen from the body, so after Max had died.

Hij zegt dat een ‘vriend van hem’ heeft gezien dat Max door een man uit de auto werd gegooid (Max was toen al dood) en daarna met een mes op hem instak. Bert vertelt ook dat de portemonnee waarschijnlijk pas hierna was gestolen.

14 Chapter 7 Rotterdam Kate meets with Tom Carson, Max’ brother. She asks him whether she can interview him or not. Tom takes her to the school and explains where most of the guys come from. Kate notices how sad Tom is and not only because his brother died.

Kate ontmoet Tom Carson, Max’ broer. Ze vraagt hem of ze hem mag interviewen. Tom neemt haar mee naar de school en legt uit waar de meeste jongens vandaan komen. Het valt Kate op hoe treurig Tom is, en niet alleen omdat zijn broer dood is.

16 Chapter 8 Life gets interesting
In this chapter Kate finds out that over the last few years Tom Carson lost a lot of his shares in the Rotterdam Football Club and most of those shares went to Martijn Christiaans. When she arrives at her hotel, there is a note for her. It says she should look into the money that was bet on Leiden to win the match against Rotterdam. Elly advises her to go to a friend of her who owes her something, Ronnie. A few minutes later Kate phoned Jos van Essen to ask him if she could join him to the game of the next day. Later evening a guy pulls Kate’s arm behind her back (when she goes out to take a walk) and tries to pull her into his car.

17 In dit hoofdstuk ontdekt Kate dat Tom Carson de laatste jaren veel aandelen heeft verloren, voornamelijk aan Martijn Christiaans. Als ze aankomt bij haar hotel, ligt er een briefje voor haar. Er staat op dat ze eens goed zou moeten kijken naar hoeveel geld er is ingezet op Leiden bij de wedstrijd Rotterdam – Leiden. Elly adviseert haar om contact op te nemen met een vriend die Elly nog wat verschuldigd is, Ronnie. Een paar minuten laten belt Kate Jos van Essen om de vragen of ze met hem mee kan naar de wedstrijd tegen Barcelona. Later die avond (als Kate een wandeling gaat maken) wordt haar arm door een vreemde man achter haar rug getrokken en probeert hij haar in zijn auto te trekken.

18 Chapter 9 The Amsterdam connection
Kate visits Ronnie to find out that the total amount of money that was made by those who bet on Leiden was around 3 mln pound, which is obviously a lot of money.

19 Kate gaat bij Ronnie langs om er achter te komen dat het totale bedrag dat is gewonnen door diegene die op Leiden hebben gewed ongeveer 3 miljoen pond bedraagt.

20 Chapter 10 A police man Kate visits Joop de Vries to talk about the thing Bert told her. Joop is a bit offended by the fact that Kate is trying to do his job. He does not believe Kate and he asks her to stick to her job and let him do his.

Kate gaat langs bij Joop de Vries om het te hebben over Bert’s verhaal. Joop is een beetje beledigd door het feit dat Kate zijn werk probeert te doen. Hij gelooft haar niet verzoekt haar om haar eigen werk te blijven doen en om hem het zijne te laten doen.

22 Chapter 11 A football match
Kate joins Jos van Essen to a football match between Rotterdam and Ajax. Jos tries to make clear that he thinks that some of the bets made by the Amsterdam Connection aren’t that honest as they should be. A day later Jos van Essen is found dead.

23 Kate gaat met Jos van Essen naar een voetbalwedstrijd tussen Rotterdam en Ajax. Jos probeert haar duidelijk te maken dat hij denkt, dat sommige weddenschappen van de Amsterdam Connection niet zo eerlijk zijn als normaal. Een dag later wordt Jos van Essen dood gevonden.

24 Chapter 12 A goalkeeper Kate meets up with Raúl Sanchez, the goalkeeper at Rotterdam city football club. Sanchez eventually confesses Kate that Martijn Christiaans has been blackmailing him to lose matches, but that he wants to stop doing this. Kate phones Elly for help and askes her whether the police had found the pills Max was on.

Kate ontmoet Raúl Sanchez, de Rotterdamse keeper. Sanchez bekent Kate uiteindelijk dat Martijn Christiaans hem chanteerde om wedstrijden te verliezen, maar dat Raúl hier wel mee wil stoppen. Kate belt Elly en vraagt om haar hulp, ook vraagt ze of de politie Max’ pillen heeft gevonden.

26 Chapter 13 A plan Kate, Elly and Raúl set up a plan to make Christiaans confess. Kate finds out that the medicine (Laxicon) Max was on, can be lethal if you take too much of it. After a few hours of waiting for Elly and Raúl, Christiaans comes to her hotel and takes her to his house.

27 Kate, Elly en Raúl bedenken een plan om Christiaans te laten bekennen
Kate, Elly en Raúl bedenken een plan om Christiaans te laten bekennen. Kate ontdekt dat het medicijn (Laxicon) dat Max gebruikte, dodelijk kan zijn bij een te hoge docering. Na een paar uur, wachtend op Elly en Raúl, komt Christiaans naar haar hotel om haar mee te nemen naar zijn huis.

28 Chapter 14 Prisoner In this chapter Elly and Kate are trapped in the cellar of Christiaans’ house. Kate manages to escape. She runs to the police office as fast as she can and they decide to put up a rescue plan to save Elly and Raúl. This plan turns out to be a success.

29 In dit hoofdstuk zitten Elly en Kate vast in de kelder van Christiaans huis. Kate weet te ontsnappen. Ze rent naar het politie bureau zo snel als ze kan en zij besluiten om een plan op te zetten om Elly en Raúl te redden. Dit plan blijkt een succes.

30 Chapter 15 Stories In chapter 15 Elly and Kate are in de Vries’ office, where they ask Tom if he knew about the Amsterdam Connection and why he never did anything about it. He explains that Christiaans would make the police believe that Tom was in it too and so there was nothing he could do.

31 In hoofdstuk 15 zijn Elly en Kate in het kantoor van de Vries waar ze Tom vragen of hij wist van de Amsterdam Connection en waarom hij nooit iets heeft gedaan. Hij legt uit dat Christiaans tegen de politie zou hebben gezegd dat Tom er ook bij betrokken was en dat hij dus niets kon doen.

32 Chapter 16 Goodbye Amsterdam
In the final chapter Kate writes her story for the newspaper and gets positive feedback from Balzano. Then she tells him she is taking a 2 week holiday.

33 In het laatste hoofdstuk schrijft Kate haar verhaal voor de krant en krijgt ze daar positieve feedback over van Balzano. Dan vertelt ze hem dat ze voor 2 weken vakantie neemt
