6 Brain plasticity and trauma
Repetitive or prolonged (psych & phys/head) * Involves harm of abandonment of caregivers or important others (Van Dijke, et al., 2011) Occurs at developmentally vulnerable epochs in life when critical periods of brain development are rapidly occurring or being consolidated (Ford & Courtois, 2009) Overwhelms normal meaning making and can result in integrative difficulties Moreover, it leaves the person at the mercy of the moment when co-regulation by a secure other is unavailable or fails

8 Complex traumatic stress symptoms
Characterized by changes in cognition The mind / cognitive processing Perceptions / Predictions Emotion information processing Personality/ drives Embodied experiencing Relationships Integrative difficulties including severe problems with dissociation, emotion dysregulation, somatic distress, or relational or spiritual alienation.

10 The silent epidemic of neurodevelopmental injuries (Kaffman, 2009)
Action Disorganization Syndrome E.G., Rapp, 2011, Humphreys & Forde, 1998 Frontal lobe syndrome DEX: Chaotic life style Getting lost/ run off Poor memory Have difficulty planning Difficulties concentrating Loose track of time , etc E.g., Beblo et al., 2006; Lenzenweger, Clarkin, Fertuck, & Kernberg, 2004

11 Sequelae of early life “neuro-developmental injury” (Kaffman, 2009) have been described as epidemic and under-studied and can vary across the life span. These complex traumatic stress reactions may constitute a syndrome, e.g., Developmental Trauma Disorder (DTD), complex PTSD (Herman, 1992) or Disorders of Extreme Stress Not Otherwise Specified (DESNOS) that includes problems with affect dysregulation, dissociation, somatization, and shattered or altered basic beliefs (e.g., Van der Kolk et al., 2005)

13 Impact of DT on cognitive development
Blockage or interruption of normal development of “learning brain” that promotes and facilitates exploration ao lower school or career achievement Derailing of cognitive function development Attention, speed and learning Working, declarative and narrative memory Emotion regulation Personality formation and growth Social development (close relationships)

15 “Traumatized brain injuries”
In an intact brain, evolutionary pre- and post-natal developments occur following bottom-up processes for experiencing, function development, and neural networking Top-down processes are involved later in life for monitoring, controlling and correcting behavior More sophisticated cognitive functions, e.g., social cognition are experience-dependent (⬄ language is experience-expectant) Plasticity of the brain and dynamics of the brain systems make it vulnerable to interferences or derailing of the normally expected developmental trajectories

16 Dysregulated information processing
Frontal lobe is 1/3 of total cortical surface in humans and reach only full developmental until 19 years (Anderson, 1998) Interference of regular multisensory integration and interplay between remote but interconnected regions of the human brain (Driver, 2010) Reflective self-awareness is compromised/ ToM Disturbed experiencing in the body Compromised cognitive functioning

17 Trans Cranial Stimulation
3.43 min TMS This is Your Brain on Magnets: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) 14

18 Vicious cycle: Survival brain dominance
Develops in anticipation of potentially damaging events Intertwined with body: stress-response system that strives for homeostasis and balancing of (para)sympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system interactions in reaction to environment Overrides or reduces the functionality of brain systems that are necessary for learning/reward seeking, managing distress, and making conscious judgments and plans (i.e. executive functioning)

19 Deep Brain Stimulation
8.40 min Tourette's battle Liam's Story Tourette's and DBS.. 15

20 Executive dysfunctioning in the survival brain
Executive influences are present in all realms of cognitive, emotional, and motor functioning, ..which perhaps explains why some authors question whether we can refer to executive (dys)functioning “as if it were a single entity”

21 Misinterpretations in Childhood
ADHD Oppositional DD Autism spectrum disorders Learning disorders Conduct disorder Temperamental disorder Selective mutism

22 Misinterpretations in Adulthood
Adult ASS Adult ADHD Psychotic disorder Schizophrenia Somatoform disorder (conversion) Deterioration (early) Cluster A or cluster C personality disorder
