THE HOLLYWOOD CURRICULUM. WHO IS THE GOOD TEACHER?
3
Mary DaltonMary Dalton, 2004 / 2010
4
WAAROM EEN ONDERZOEK NAAR DE CINEMATOGRAFISCHE REPRESENTATIE/BEELDVORMING VAN DE LEERKRACHT? “I do believe, however, that general knowledge about the relationships between teachers and students, knowledge beyond the scope of the personal or anecdotal, is created by constructs of popular culture played out in the mass media.” (Dalton, 2004: 2)Dalton
5
“Commercial films not only tell (women) teachers how other people construct them and re-articulate them as characters on the movie screen but also shape the way students and parents respond to teachers and the way (women) teachers respond to public opinion in the construction of their own lives.” (Dalton, 2004: 103)Dalton
6
CF. HENRI A. GIROUX “While some may argue that Dangerous Minds is too popular and too unoriginal to be taken seriously as a cultural text, it is precisely because of its popularity and widespread appeal that it warrants an extended analysis.” (Giroux, 2002: 147)Giroux
7
FILM = ‘PUBLIC PEDAGOGY’ “I make no claims suggesting that there is a direct correlation between what people see, hear, and read and how they act; between the representations they are exposed to and the actual events that shape their lives. But I do argue that film as a form of civic engagement and public pedagogy creates a climate that helps to shape individual behavior and public attitudes in multiple ways, whether consciously or unconsciously.” (Giroux, 2002: 11)Giroux

11
“WHO IS THE ‘GOOD’ TEACHER?” 1. Teacher as outsider 2. A personalized curriculum 3. Tension between the teacher and administrators 4. Personally involved with students 5. Teachers learning from students
12
THE TECHNICAL-SCIENTIFIC VALUE FRAMEWORKS OF ‘BAD’ TEACHERS IN THE MOVIES • Leerkrachten die de regels volgen en strikt volgens het boekje werken • Leerkrachten die vooral oog hebben voor cijfers en eindtermen
13
CONCLUSIE Dominante betekenis (‘preferred meaning’) = “Despite their great breadth, these films tell essentially one story about teachers − good teachers are projected on the screen as bright lights in schools of darkness.” (Dalton, 2004: 26)Dalton
14
MASTER NARRATIVE / MYTHE
15
16
KRITISCHE BENADERING VAN ‘DE LERAAR ALS HELD’ “Mr Holland's Opus, Dead Poets Society and Dangerous Minds are three of the many teacher films that portray teaching as a heroic profession in which rebellion can bring about success. Such films often provoke a sense of fear and anxiety within pre-service teachers, as we come to believe that to be a 'quality' teacher we must perform extraordinary tasks.” (Howarth, 2006)
17
“ the motion pictures construct the good teacher, ultimately, as a tool of social conformity while positioning these teachers on the surface as representing opposition in the form of resistance to the ‘system’” (Dalton, 2004: 25)Dalton
18
20
MASTER NARRATIVES VS. COUNTER NARRATIVES
21
Master narratives Dominant cultural narratives ↕ Counter narratives
22
MASTER NARRATIVE “One of the key functions of master narratives is that they offer people a way of identifying what is assumed to be a normative experience.” (Bamberg & Andrews, 2004)Bamberg & Andrews
23
COUNTER NARRATIVE “...the stories which people tell and live which offer resistance (...) to dominant cultural narratives.” (Bamberg & Andrews, 2004)Bamberg & Andrews
24
COUNTER NARRATIVES: THE POWER TO OPPOSE “How can we make sense of ourselves, and our lives, if the shape of our life story looks deviant compared to the regular lines of the dominant stories? The challenge then becomes one of finding meaning outside of the emplotments which are ordinarily available. We become aware of new possibilities.” (Bamberg & Andrews, 2004)Bamberg & Andrews

DE FALENDE LERAAR •[satire] Payne, A. (1999). Election. (US) •Hoffman, M. (2002). The Emperor’s Club. (US) •Fleck, R. (2006). Half Nelson. (US) → de leerkracht als zwakke mens
31

STEREOTYPISCH / TRADITIONEEL BEELD VAN DE VROUWELIJKE LEERKRACHT “Is it any wonder that the traditional image of the stereotypical schoolteacher wears a blouse buttoned up to her neck, a skirt that falls far below her knees, and a severe hairstyle? If she must be looked at as she stands in front of the class, she certainly does not want to be actually seen.” (Dalton, 2004: 92)Dalton

45
