Rheingold 1993: Social aggregations that emerge form the Net when enough people carry on those public discussions long enough, with sufficient human feeling, to form webs of personal relationships Preece 2000: People socially interacting (over a longer period of time) to satisfy their needs, with a shared purpose, policies to guide their interaction, and computer systems to support and mediate social interaction

Betekenis Online Communities
Historische veranderingen (Europa, USA, Azie(?)): Verdwijnen grote ideologieën: postmodernisme Secularisatie Verminderde deelname vakbonden en verenigingen Geboortebeperking en scheidingsmogelijkheden Scheiding werk – wonen Techniek: infrastructuur, communicatie Gevolgen: Globalisatie en localisatie van locale, regionale groepen naar ‘glocale’ netwerken (Wellman (2003): ‘networked individualism’)
30
Betekenis online communites: het debat
Critici: homogeniteit gebrek aan commitment selectieve deelname (digitale kloof) nostalgische mythe van gemeenschap verhult problemen IRL Aanhangers: utopie (globale) gemeenschapszin, vrijheid, gelijkheid, broederschap bijdrage sociaal kapitaal (geld verdienen....)
31
Betekenis Online communities: effect Internet empirisch onderzocht
Afstemming middelen Regulatie interactie Afstemming organisatie, services
33
Bijdrage software: afstemming
Hoe ‘groep’ zijn we hier eigenlijk? Wederzijdse afhankelijkheid in doelen en taakuitvoering Intensiteit interactie Duur interactie Formeel lidmaatschap Omvang Standaard Adressering Permanent Context Thematisch Presence + 1/1;1/n - Mailinglijst 1/n;n/n - (+) +/- BBS n/n + (-) Chat 1/1;n/n MUD/MOO ++ Blog

Bijdrage: regulatie (sociale) interactie
Sturen/ondersteunen interactie social presence persoonlijke informatie: profielen, signatures, emoticons, aanwezigheid, communicatiekanalen informatie sociale netwerken regels rollen waardering (rating, reputation systems) “boundaries” usability intelligentie

Regulatie: community driven filters
38
Regulatie: reputatiesystemen (Karma points)
39
Bijdrage: organisatie en beleid
Online Communities zijn in principe zelforganiserend: geen centrale sturing, coordinatie door lokale agenten sociaal dilemma (Smith&Kollock, 1996) condities voor coöperatie herhaald contact continuïteit bewerkstelligen (bijv. registratie) identificatie van de ander info over voorafgaand gedrag stabiele identiteit, vertrouwen bewerkstelligen (profiel, unieke login, archief) (Axelrod, 1984)
40
Organisatieprincipes voor ‘common pool resources’ (Ostrom, 1990):
Group boundaries are clearly defined Rules governing the use of collective goods are well matched to local needs and conditions Most individuals affected by these rules can participate in modifying the rules The right of community members to devise their own rules is respected by external authorities A system for monitoring members' behavior exists; this monitoring is undertaken by the community members themselves A graduated system of sanctions is used Community members have access to low-cost conflict resolution mechanisms
